Here at DIVE Rutland we are keen to help everyone experience SCUBA diving!


For this reason we have built our instructional capability specifically to accomodate people with disabilities, who through PADI learning programmes may find difficulty in meeting performance requirements, particularly around independent skills.

The International Association for Handicapped Divers provides an internationally recognised programme of diver training designed for people with disabilities.  Our goal is to establish a truly inclusive dive centre, providing learning opportunities for all.

It's still early days though and it takes time to build the team of assistants required to adequately support people to dive.

The IAHD website  provides an overview of the range of courses on offer, for the time-being DIVE Rutland is focussing on the Dive Partner Course particularly for certified PADI Rescue Divers and above.

Then the IAHD Dive Partner Course is what you are looking for!


The rewards from partnering a diver with disabilities can be immensely enjoyable and deeply satisfying. To enable individuals with serious physical disabilities to participate in underwater activities requires a very competent buddy. The IAHD Dive Partner course provides training in how to dive with a physically disabled diver.

Course Prerequisites:

To participate in the Dive Partner course you must:
  • Show proof of Rescue Diver training.
  • Submit a copy of a 'fit to dive' medical examination, conducted within the past 12 months.
  • Submit proof of training in First Aid/CPR within the past 24 months
  • Sign and submit a IAHD Safe Diving Practice Agreement and Liability Waiver
  • Have a minimum of 30 verified open water dives, with experience in navigation and night diving
  • Be at least 18 years of age
