Safety - Free Flow Regulators

24/11/2020

As we look to come out of lockdown and we all start to get back into open water, its a little colder out there now than it was... so please be prepared for cold water and the potential for free-flowing regulators.

What is Cold Water?

EU norm considers cold water diving to be when the temperature of the water is equal to or drops below 6 degrees C, so whilst our inland water sites stay reasonably warm for most of the year, the water temperature can drop sharply during the winter months. Even during the summer months, deeper parts of the lake can still be relatively cold.

Regulators perform differently in cold water diving compared to temperate water - the aim is to do everything that you can to prevent the regulator freezing which, in turn, causes the dreaded free flow effect.

By following simple guidelines, the risk of free flows can be minimised substantially.

Safety and Maintenance

We might be closed but behind the scenes the work continues. The van has recently been serviced and has a new MOT, new fire extinguishers installed, and a new safety certificate received and new outside lights ready to be installed.

Safety is the cornerstone of all aspects of Dive Rutland. It is something that all divers should embed into ALL dives, by receiving the right training and looking after your dive equipment is important.

What is Safety? The definition is the condition of being safe from undergoing or causing hurt, injury, or loss

Now is an ideal time to give your dive equipment the once over and make sure all items are working – not sure what to do then save yourself some pennies in the longer run by attending an Equipment Speciality, the theory is via eLearning and then we can do the practical demonstrations remotely or book in for a classroom session later

Equipment Speciality
The bigger items like your regulators, cylinders can all be booked in for servicing now – just ring or email to arrange a drop off time.
