I started diving by accident in 1988 when I was in the Royal Air Force. The diving club was looking for someone to run it, so I volunteered. I soon became hooked on the sport, especially the opportunity to share my passion with others. I developed my skills and became a British Sub-Aqua Club Assistant Instructor before taking a 20 years’ rest to bring up a family. I returned to the sport through another ‘accident’, a chance remark, only to realise that my passion for diving hadn’t diminished in the slightest.

Diving has given me the opportunity to travel to some wonderful places, including Antigua, Cuba, Gozo, Kos and Egypt, as well as some great locations in the UK.

I’ve met some amazing people over the years, including servicemen who have suffered life changing injuries and are using diving as part of their rehabilitation through a charity called Deptherapy. My passion is instructing; I really enjoy the pleasure that others experience when they learn to dive and the world that it opens to them.
I enjoy learning new skills, not just for the sake of it, but for the fact that it reminds me of what it’s like to be a student and how I can make learning fun and accessible to people with various challenges. I’ve found that diving in a full-face mask provides even greater accessibility to people who would normally not be able to dive, which is a wonderful opportunity to share my passion with even more people. There are so many specialities within diving there is something for everyone.

My own specialities include discovering underwater wildlife and have had the privilege of diving with sharks, turtles, octopus, rays and less exotic species in the UK, such as pike, sturgeon and roach. You don’t have to dive deep or abroad to get the thrill of diving, so what are you waiting for? Christmas?
