Rick's Bio

How I started Diving

My first experience of Scuba diving was when a few of us enrolled for a Discover Scuba Diving at the hotel pool in the Dominican Republic back in 1999. I really enjoyed this but due to personal commitments was unable to do anything further until 2007 when I did another DSD in a pool whilst on holiday in Malta. This was followed by a few more pool DSD’s over the next few years but It wasn’t until the summer of 2013 while we were back in Malta when I did another pool DSD but this time with an additional open water dive in Suzi’s Pool at Cirkewwa. I was hooked once I had seen what was under the waves I wanted to see more and explore more.

I returned home from my holiday and typed “PADI Dive Centre” into the search bar in google to find my local dive centre. Dive Rutland was the nearest one to home so a quick telephone call and a short drive over to the dive centre for a chat and I was signed up for my PADI Open Water Diver course. A few pool sessions and a couple of frosty Sundays at Stoney cove later I qualified as an open water diver with the bonus of my drysuit speciality as well. My instructors name? Dive Rutland’s “boss” and course director Tracey Roberts, a name that now appears on many of my certification cards.

The time since then I have been busy increasing my diving skills and qualifications. Advanced Open water diver and Rescue Diver as well as the Deep, Wreck, Enriched Air, Equipment Specialist and Gas Blender specialities which when added to my drysuit speciality helped me to achieve the Master Scuba Diver Certification. Then came the challenge, where do you go and what do you do once you have achieved the highest certification level of recreational diving? The answer was to become a PADI PRO.

So, the next step in my progression was to move into the PADI Professional ranks by qualifying as a PADI Divemaster and joining the Dive Rutland Team. And now? Well the training still continues to this day as I am currently in the process of completing my PADI assistant instructor course and who knows how much further along the professional route the passion for diving will take me.

The best bits and the Favourite bits

Diving in wonderful locations around the world such as Malta, the Red Sea in Egypt and the pristine reefs of the Philippines. Exploring Wrecks such as the Thistlegorm and the Um El Faroud. Diving with wonderful sea creatures such as Whale sharks, Turtles, Thresher sharks and fish of multiple colours, shapes and sizes all specialised in their own way to living in specific areas of the seas.

My passion is that I love underwater photography and video, not just the big things like whale sharks or thresher sharks but the small things that many divers swim straight by are top of my list. Macro photography of the smallest spider crabs, glass shrimps, nudibranch, the small and elusive pygmy sea horse, shrimps, crabs and worms as well as the wonderful fish and corals are all on my photograph lists for a dive.

Qualifications

PADI Divemaster, RAID Divemaster, EFR instructor, EFR First Aid at Work Instructor, Childcare First Aid Instructor, Gas Blender
